Therapist's Rights & Responsibilities

Therapist's Rights

  • Right to make independent clinical judgments

  • Freedom to decline to treat a client if it would compromise the therapist's ethics, dignity or values

  • Right to work in an environment in which the therapist can practice without coercion, conflict of interest, or undue influence, including being pressured into overutilization of services for the facility's gain

  • Right to be treated with respect and consideration by clients and colleagues

Therapist's Responsibilities to Clients

  • Demonstrate responsible caring and concern for the client

  • Do not guarantee a cure or misrepresent the potential effects of an intervention

  • Do not treat clients when under the influence of any substance that would impair the ability to treat safely

  • Listen to and respect client's values, beliefs and needs

  • Maintain appropriate clinical boundaries and refrain from sexual interaction of any sort with clients

  • Provide client-centered, preventative care

  • Provide the client with an opportunity to give voluntary and informed consent

  • Respond appropriately to client's emotional reaction to treatment

  • Use draping to maintain the client's privacy and appropriate clinical boundaries
